Dr. Showalter brings over 15 years of experience in oncology diagnostics, AI-driven health technology, and academic medicine. Prior to joining Viz.ai, he served as Chief Medical Officer at Artera AI, where he played a key role in developing AI-based biomarkers for personalized oncology care, including the first FDA-cleared digital pathology AI test that received recognition in national guidelines. He also founded Advaray, Inc., a radiation therapy device company that developed BrachyGelTM, received FDA clearance, and was later acquired by CQ Medical.

Chris Mansi, MD, CEO and co-founder of Viz.ai, highlighted Dr. Showalter’s appointment as a milestone for the company. Mansi emphasized that Dr. Showalter’s combination of clinical expertise, deep knowledge of AI and oncology, and track record in translating innovation into clinical impact makes him the ideal leader to expand Viz.ai’s platform. As the company grows into oncology, pulmonology, and other clinical areas, Mansi noted that Showalter’s leadership will help ensure that Viz.ai’s products continue to deliver meaningful results for patients, healthcare systems, and life science partners.

In his new role, Dr. Showalter will oversee the development and implementation of AI-assisted care pathways and manage strategic collaborations with leading life science companies, health systems, and professional societies. He will also focus on generating clinical evidence and supporting the adoption of AI technologies across new disease areas to improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

Dr. Showalter expressed his enthusiasm for joining Viz.ai at a pivotal time in the company’s growth. He noted that Viz.ai has already transformed how AI can be used alongside care coordination to accelerate patient treatment and improve outcomes for acute medical conditions. He plans to build on this foundation by expanding AI solutions into additional disease areas, improving care for patients with complex conditions, and supporting the clinicians who care for them.

In addition to his new role at Viz.ai, Dr. Showalter continues to serve as a Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, maintaining a part-time clinical practice. He has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed papers, led NIH-funded research projects, and was recognized as the Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year at UVA in 2023. Dr. Showalter is a nationally recognized cancer researcher and has held previous leadership positions at the University of Virginia and Flatiron Health.

He earned his MD from the University of Virginia, an MPH from Johns Hopkins University, and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
