The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics has announced that Melanie Wells, MPH, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of both ACMG and the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine , will step down from her role, officially concluding her tenure on November 21, 2025. Wells will remain with the organization during the transition period, and an interim CEO will soon be named to maintain consistent leadership and operations.

Since joining ACMG and ACMGF in 2016, Wells has served in several leadership positions, including Director of Administration, Chief Operating Officer, and most recently, Chief Executive Officer. Over her nine years with the organizations, she has guided both through a time of operational improvement and financial stabilization, ensuring they are well-positioned for sustainable growth in the years ahead.

Among her key achievements as CEO, Wells led the creation and implementation of the 2025–2029 Strategic Plans for both ACMG and ACMGF, aligning each organization’s mission with measurable objectives and long-term outcomes. She also expanded governance and development efforts, successfully filling crucial Foundation Board positions and helping secure the largest individual philanthropic contribution in ACMGF’s history. In addition, she championed workforce diversity and inclusion through initiatives such as the E3 Genomics Pathways Program, designed to foster the next generation of professionals in genetics and genomics.

Reflecting on her tenure, Wells said that the success of these efforts was a testament to the dedication and collaboration of the ACMG team, leadership, and members. She expressed pride in how the organizations have strengthened their operations, enhanced their visibility, and redefined their strategic direction. Wells added that both ACMG and ACMGF are well-prepared for continued success, emphasizing her confidence in the people and leadership teams who will carry the mission forward with purpose and unity.

ACMG President Mira Irons, MD, FACMG, commended Wells for her steady and visionary leadership, noting that her strategic direction and commitment have guided the organizations through a period of remarkable progress and transformation. Dr. Irons stated that Wells’ leadership has positioned ACMG and ACMGF for continued success and expressed gratitude for the strong foundation she leaves behind for the organizations’ next chapter.

Nancy Mendelson, MD, FACMG, President of ACMGF, shared similar appreciation for Wells’ contributions, highlighting how her leadership strengthened the collaboration between the College and the Foundation. Dr. Mendelson noted that Wells’ efforts expanded the Foundation’s capacity to support education, innovation, and philanthropy in medical genetics. She added that Wells’ vision and commitment have set both organizations on a path of continued stability and growth and that the Foundation is deeply thankful for her years of service and lasting impact.
