WestFax Comprehend Now Available Across All Service Tiers, Automating Medical Document Classification, Data Extraction and Workflow Routing
WestFax, known for its HIPAA compliant cloud fax and secure healthcare document exchange services, has introduced a new solution called WestFax Comprehend, an artificial intelligence driven Intelligent Document Processing platform built specifically for healthcare providers. The platform is designed to streamline how medical organizations receive, sort and manage high volumes of incoming documents while continuing to use their existing fax systems, electronic health records and document management tools.

Hospitals, clinics and physician groups still rely heavily on fax and other file transfer methods to receive referrals, lab reports, prior authorization requests and insurance paperwork. Much of this information arrives as unstructured image based files, which can slow administrative teams and create backlogs. WestFax Comprehend addresses this challenge by converting incoming documents into structured, searchable data. Using artificial intelligence and optical character recognition technology, the platform transforms scanned files into searchable PDFs, identifies the document type and extracts essential patient and provider details for validation and routing.
The solution supports document intake from multiple sources, including cloud fax, secure file transfer systems, designated drop folders and common cloud storage environments. At the center of the platform is a consolidated intake framework called Streams. This architecture gathers inbound files into configurable workflows that allow healthcare IT teams to define routing rules, flag urgent requests, detect documents containing information for more than one patient and automatically separate combined files. The goal is to give organizations greater visibility and control over how documents move through their systems without adding operational complexity.
WestFax Comprehend also includes built in connectors that allow processed documents to flow directly into electronic health record systems and widely used third party platforms. These integrations support environments such as Hyland OnBase, Amazon Web Services S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage and Dropbox. For organizations that maintain private cloud infrastructures, the platform can route structured documents directly into those environments as well.
Barry Clark, President of WestFax, said the company developed Comprehend with a clear focus on reducing the administrative workload that often burdens healthcare staff. He explained that many providers depend on established document workflows that cannot simply be replaced, so the objective was to introduce practical AI capabilities that strengthen existing systems rather than disrupt them. According to Clark, the platform enhances reliability while helping teams manage documents more efficiently.
Doug Clayton, Chief AI Officer at WestFax, emphasized that accuracy and compliance remain central to any AI deployment in healthcare. He noted that Intelligent Document Processing must be dependable and easy to use, particularly in clinical settings where errors can have serious consequences. Clayton added that the company’s approach prioritizes measurable workflow improvements while minimizing operational risk for healthcare organizations.
Core features of WestFax Comprehend include advanced OCR with searchable PDF output, document classification aligned with FHIR standards and customizable tagging options. The system can automatically extract key patient and provider information, detect multiple patients within a single document and separate those records appropriately. Healthcare teams can configure workflow automation rules to match their internal processes, while secure storage options and integration connectors ensure documents are delivered to the right destination within existing IT ecosystems.
WestFax Comprehend is now available nationwide to both current and new WestFax customers. With this launch, the company aims to help healthcare organizations modernize document intake, improve processing speed and maintain compliance without overhauling the infrastructure they already rely on.
