Richard Fabian, President and CEO of FUJIFILM Sonosite, explained that peripheral IV procedures are some of the most frequently performed interventions and that ultrasound guidance is especially valuable for patients with difficult IV access. He emphasized that Sonosite has consistently focused on innovation in both education and product development, and PIV Assist is the result of collaboration with clinicians to create a tool that reduces cognitive burden and increases confidence during vascular access planning. Fabian highlighted that these improvements directly contribute to higher quality patient care.

PIV Assist helps users identify suitable veins, evaluate vein size, and provide guidance on the maximum catheter size based on the catheter-to-vein ratio. The system differentiates veins from arteries during the pre-scan and delivers real-time information to support procedural planning. Key features include color-coded vein mapping to indicate the recommended catheter gauge, arterial marking in red, real-time CVR visualization showing vein depth, and workflow support to enhance efficiency and clinician confidence.

The AI model behind PIV Assist was trained on tens of thousands of ultrasound images to ensure reliable identification of veins and arteries. The feature is offered as a licensed upgrade across Sonosite LX, PX, and ST systems, giving clinicians widespread access to AI-driven guidance for peripheral IV procedures. With this release, Fujifilm Sonosite continues to advance the integration of AI in point-of-care ultrasound, supporting safer, faster, and more accurate vascular access for patients worldwide.
