The NCQA assessment checks how well organizations handle key areas like readiness to achieve equity goals, gathering and using data on race, ethnicity, language, gender identity, and sexual orientation, the availability of language services, the cultural awareness of provider networks, and efforts to reduce healthcare gaps. During the review of GCHP’s performance, NCQA praised the plan for having “dedicated and knowledgeable staff” and for its strong ability to understand and meet the cultural, racial, and language needs of its members.
Dr. Felix Nuñez, CEO of GCHP, said this recognition shows the whole organization’s commitment to achieving health equity. He explained that the team worked with focus and determination to reach this milestone, and the effort will continue. According to Dr. Nuñez, GCHP will keep building on this foundation to make sure members receive care that truly fits their unique needs.

For members, this accreditation means better access to providers who understand and respect cultural differences, health plan staff who can communicate in their preferred language, and services that are guided by awareness and inclusivity. Dr. James Cruz, GCHP’s Chief Medical Officer, said the recognition is a proud moment for both the health plan and Ventura County. He highlighted that studies show when health equity improves, people have better health and more fulfilling lives, and these benefits go beyond just members to the whole community.
Looking ahead, GCHP plans to seek NCQA Health Plan Accreditation later this year. This program offers a nationally recognized way to measure and improve healthcare quality. It evaluates organizations based on clinical results and patient experiences, helping them strengthen operations that matter most to members, providers, and communities.
