National Blood Donor Month, which has been observed in the United States each January since 1970, serves as a reminder of the constant need for blood and platelets, especially during the winter months when donations often decline.

Hospitals and emergency services rely on regular contributions to maintain adequate supplies for patients in need of surgeries, cancer treatments, and emergency care. Every year, an estimated 6.8 million Americans donate blood – approximately 3% of the eligible adult population. While those donors are to be commended, there is the need for more: every two seconds, an American needs blood.
Asner emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting that even a single donation can save up to three lives. “As a member of the Kansas City community, I believe we all have a role to play in supporting our neighbors and contributing to the well-being of our city. Donating blood is a powerful way to make a difference.”
