At-home participation in a study by Scripps Research and Schmidt Initiative for Long Covid powered by CareEvolution’s MyDataHelps platform
Long Covid patients in the United States can now sign up for updates about a new remote clinical trial being run by researchers at Scripps Research and supported by the Schmidt Initiative for Long Covid (SILC). People interested in joining can register on the Long Covid Treatment Trial (LoCITT) website. This study is meant to help those with serious symptoms, who often cannot easily travel to a clinic, take part in research from their own homes. Julia Moore Vogel, a senior program director at the Scripps Research Translational Institute, said, “Travel can be risky for people with severe Long Covid. LoCITT lets even those with the worst symptoms join the search for answers.”

The trial, which uses CareEvolution’s MyDataHelps platform, will test how well a repurposed drug works for treating Long Covid. This fully remote study plans to include 1,000 patients across the country and allows everyone to do all trial steps from home. Vik Kheterpal, MD, principal at CareEvolution, explained, “Decentralized trials reach more people, speed things up, and give better real-world evidence. LoCITT will help us run trials more efficiently as we look for treatments for complex conditions like Long Covid.”
Long Covid has affected more than 400 million people globally and is estimated to cost the world economy over one trillion dollars each year. The disease often causes problems with movement, making it hard for patients to take part in usual clinical trials. This Scripps Research-led study will use the LoCITT platform to manage enrollment, send study drugs and placebos, and collect data all from home. Moore Vogel, co-principal investigator of the study with Eric Topol, said this approach is important for including people who otherwise would not be able to join.

Remote clinical trials like this one do not require in-person visits to clinics, making it easier for more people to take part. They also help bring in a more diverse group of participants, which can lead to findings that apply to a wider range of people. John Redd, CEO of SILC, said, “We need strong, fast efforts to help patients who are struggling with this difficult condition. We hope a remote trial can help us find effective treatments more quickly.”
CareEvolution customized its MyDataHelps platform for this trial, making it easier to screen, enroll, and assign participants. Patients will get study medicines and wearable devices by mail to track things like heart rate, activity level, and sleep. This data could help researchers create digital biomarkers for Long Covid and related conditions like myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), which causes long-term fatigue, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which leads to symptoms like dizziness and a fast heartbeat when standing up. Patients can check if they are eligible, sign consent online, and complete symptom surveys through the platform, making the whole process simple and easy to use.
