VIVOTEK has successfully rolled out a comprehensive security solution across PathCare’s nationwide network of pathology laboratories in South Africa, significantly improving the safety of staff and patients, protecting sensitive medical assets, and ensuring adherence to critical laboratory operating procedures. This deployment highlights how integrated security platforms can be effectively implemented in complex healthcare environments with multiple sites, strict compliance requirements, and the need for centralized management and high operational reliability.
Health Technology Insights: MHK Launches SmartProminence AI Solutions
PathCare is a leading and trusted provider of specialist pathology services in South Africa, operating around the clock across a large network of laboratories and depots. The company delivers a wide range of diagnostic services including clinical, anatomical, and forensic testing. With facilities spread across Gauteng, North-West, and Limpopo provinces, PathCare plays a vital role in the national healthcare system. As its operations expanded, the need for consistent and secure surveillance across all sites became a priority to safeguard staff, patients, and valuable medical assets.
As the network grew, maintaining reliable and centralized monitoring across all laboratories became a significant challenge. Many of the facilities still relied on older analog CCTV systems that were prone to technical issues, lacked scalability, and did not allow unified oversight across sites. This created vulnerabilities, including previous incidents of burglary, robbery, and vandalism, as well as difficulty in controlling access to restricted laboratory zones. Additionally, core laboratory processes such as sample collection, transportation, and analysis required continuous oversight to ensure compliance. The older systems could not provide this level of control or visibility, and the absence of a centralized monitoring solution made tracking sensitive samples and reports difficult, increasing the risk of errors or loss. To address these challenges, PathCare sought an advanced, cost-effective security platform that could be deployed at scale, provide centralized management, and include features such as wide coverage and audio recording.

VIVOTEK, a leading global security solutions provider, collaborated with local integrator Chase Networks and distributor Rectron to implement a fully integrated security system. The solution included VSS Pro Video Management Software for centralized monitoring and multi-user access, 49 network video recorders to ensure reliable distributed video storage, and 352 VIVOTEK network cameras. The deployment featured the compact 69-series dome cameras with wide-angle lenses and built-in audio, which offered scalable coverage at a reasonable cost.
The system gives PathCare a centralized overview of all facilities, allowing security teams to monitor sensitive laboratory areas, ensure compliance with standard operating procedures during sample handling and analysis, and track key samples and reports. VSS Pro’s health monitoring and permission management capabilities addressed the limitations of older analog systems, while the compact network cameras enabled efficient deployment across multiple locations. The partnership demonstrates how modern, integrated security solutions can enhance operational efficiency and provide robust protection in multi-site healthcare environments.
