ShiftMed, a well-known AI-driven platform for connecting healthcare professionals with employment opportunities, has announced a new partnership with Uber Health. This update lets healthcare workers in hospitals book transportation directly through the ShiftMed Flex platform. The feature allows doctors and hospital staff to arrange Uber rides to and from their shifts without needing to pay in advance, which helps reduce confusion and frustration. Now, over 5.7 million healthcare workers in the U.S. can access easier and more efficient transportation options.

Healthcare systems using ShiftMed Flex can quickly activate this feature for both part-time and full-time staff. Once enabled, workers can request Uber rides directly from the ShiftMed app. The cost of the ride is taken from their pay for the shift, so they don’t have to pay upfront. This makes the commute smoother and less stressful, helping to ease transportation issues for healthcare workers, which in turn can improve job satisfaction, support staff retention, and ensure better patient care.

Jacob Laufer, ShiftMed’s Chief Operating Officer, said that transportation is a big challenge for many healthcare workers. He added that with so many people working in healthcare, this integration can help remove commuting obstacles. According to Laufer, the collaboration with Uber Health allows hospitals to expand their staff pool, making it easier to match the right professionals with the right shifts, which benefits both workers and healthcare providers.

One of the first organizations to use this new feature is SSM Health. Their clinicians have used Uber Health rides to cover more than 50 shifts each year. This has helped keep acute care units staffed during busy times, leading to more than double the number of shifts being filled.

Seth Lovell, who heads nursing transformation and innovation at SSM Health, said that reliable transportation is key to keeping staffing consistent. Valerie Holland, who manages U.S. sales at Uber Health, said their platform is changing how healthcare organizations handle transportation. She mentioned that working with ShiftMed helps bring quicker and more flexible travel options to healthcare staff, improving the experience for both workers and patients.
