The VISERA ELITE™ III Platform Was Developed by the SONY Olympus Medical Joint Venture

Olympus Corporation has announced the U.S. launch of the VISERA ELITE™ III surgical imaging platform, a next-generation system designed to enhance surgical visualization, improve workflow efficiency, and support multispecialty surgical environments. The platform represents a significant advancement in medical imaging technology and is the third major product co-developed by SONY Olympus Medical (SOMED), a joint venture established in 2013.

The VISERA ELITE III platform integrates advanced imaging capabilities within a software-driven architecture built to support minimally invasive surgery across multiple specialties. The system combines True 4K and 3D imaging, Continuous Auto Focus (CAF), Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI) technology, Yellow Enhancement (YE), ENDOEYE™ rigid and flexible videoscopes, and Fluorescence-Guided Surgery (IR/ICG) to provide superior light, color, and clarity within the human body. These features are now available on a single platform, allowing doctors to increase visualization and make more informed surgical decisions.

A key feature of the VISERA ELITE III platform is its advanced imaging modes, including Yellow Enhancement and Fluorescence-Guided Surgery in full 4K White Light with high-contrast Magenta Mode. These technologies help surgeons identify anatomical structures with greater clarity, potentially improving precision during complex procedures. Continuous Auto Focus technology ensures sharp imaging throughout procedures, reducing the risk of losing focus during critical surgical steps.

The system is designed to support a wide range of surgical specialties, including arthroscopy, colorectal surgery, ENT procedures, bariatric surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecology, urology, hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) transplant procedures, and general surgery. Its versatility enables hospitals to standardize imaging technology across departments while maintaining compatibility with prior-generation Olympus videoendoscopes.

Darryl Rock, Vice President and Surgical Solutions Regional Business Lead at Olympus Corporation of the Americas, highlighted the platform’s strategic importance for modern operating rooms. According to Rock, VISERA ELITE III is not simply an imaging system but a core component of Olympus’ SEE. TREAT. CONNECT.™ ecosystem. The platform’s software-based design allows healthcare institutions to scale capabilities while controlling capital investment, enabling hospitals to activate advanced features such as 3D visualization and infrared imaging as clinical needs evolve.

Clinical benefits of the VISERA ELITE III platform include comprehensive advanced imaging technologies, enhanced visualization through multiple infrared modes, and improved identification of vessels, nerves, and other critical structures within adipose tissue. In a 2025 surgeon survey, eight out of ten respondents reported that Yellow Enhancement technology may assist in identifying vital anatomical structures more effectively.

Additional surgical benefits include improved procedural precision through 3D imaging with horizon lock, which may reduce suturing time during laparoscopic procedures compared with traditional 2D visualization. Fluorescence-guided surgery using indocyanine green (ICG) also enables surgeons to assess tissue perfusion and resection margins, potentially reducing complications such as anastomotic leaks.

Dr. Natan Zundel, MD, FACS, FASMBS, a bariatric and metabolic surgeon at Jackson Health in Miami, noted that fluorescence imaging enables surgeons to clearly visualize tissue perfusion during procedures, allowing them to continue surgical dissection with greater confidence.

Beyond clinical advantages, the VISERA ELITE III platform offers measurable operational benefits. By supporting multiple surgical specialties within a single system, hospitals can reduce equipment redundancy, standardize operating room infrastructure, and streamline surgical workflows. The platform also integrates with hospital IT systems through Olympus VaultStream™ and LiveStream™ portals, enabling video capture, clinical documentation, and seamless electronic health record integration.

Additionally, compatibility with previous Olympus camera and scope generations helps healthcare facilities extend the lifespan of existing equipment while transitioning to newer imaging technologies.

With the introduction of VISERA ELITE III, Olympus continues advancing surgical imaging innovation while supporting healthcare providers with scalable, high-performance technologies designed for modern operating rooms and evolving surgical practices.
