A strong bond between a patient and their therapist is very important for improving mental health. When a therapist has the right skills, understands different cultures, and connects well with the patient, it helps create a good environment for meaningful progress. Using artificial intelligence to match patients with the most suitable therapists can improve the quality of care and the results for patients. New research from Lyra Health, which provides mental health services for employers, shows that using AI to find the right providers not only helps patients better but also reduces the cost of treatment.

This research, published in the respected journal Value in Health, looked at Lyra’s AI system for matching therapists and found that it cut the number of therapy sessions needed by an average of two. It also lowered the cost per session by almost 20 percent without affecting the quality of care. This efficiency can save up to $340 for each member and helps Lyra provide a strong 3:1 return on investment for employers.
Lyra’s algorithm is different from older ones because it uses a value-based method. It looks at more than just a therapist’s area of expertise or availability. It also considers how well a therapist has helped patients improve in the past. The study found that members matched using this improved algorithm had similar results but achieved them in fewer sessions, which lowered overall costs.

Dr. Anita Lungu, vice president of clinical product and research at Lyra Health, said, “This study shows that AI, when used with good data, can do more than make it easier to access care. It can help match therapists in a way that gets people better faster while keeping the quality of care high. By using AI to look at detailed outcome data, we showed that smarter matching can lead to real cost savings without lowering clinical results.”
Lyra is the first modern mental health provider for workers to publish peer-reviewed research on using AI in matching therapists. This study joins over 20 other peer-reviewed papers supporting Lyra’s approach of offering transparent, evidence-based care. By focusing on real results and investing in technology and research, Lyra is helping employers offer mental health benefits that are reliable, measurable, and built for long-term success.
