New study shows significant improvements in patient treatment adherence with Lumata Health’s Continuous Care model.

Lumata Health, the company focused on ending preventable blindness with continuous ophthalmic care for people facing chronic eye disease, announced the results of its new research report, “Lumata’s Continuous Care Program Demonstrates Increased Appointment Attendance by Addressing Barriers to Care.” The study of several private retina practice groups examined clinic-visit and injection-visit frequency and barriers to patient continuity. Results showed people have vastly greater adherence to treatment protocols when using Lumata Health, preventing typical year-over-year patient attrition of critical retina visits and intravitreal injection-specific visits that are necessary to avoid preventable blindness.

“The solution to preventing blindness in chronic eye disease isn’t better treatment. It’s better care outside of the physician’s office, and that’s what we are laser-focused on providing to people,” said Landon Grace, CEO of Lumata Health.

More than 90% of people with vision impairment have a preventable or treatable cause with existing interventions, but only if patients adhere to their treatment plan, which includes regular monitoring visits and intravitreal injection visits. Yet, systemic barriers delay or prevent people from getting this timely, critical care to maintain their vision. Studies show that even brief lapses in follow‑ups or treatments are associated with clinically meaningful and often irreversible loss of visual acuity. The CDC projects a devastating increase in vision-threatening disease by 2050 without effective interventions, underscoring the urgent need for prevention and improved access to treatment to curb this impending public health crisis, which is projected to increase costs by 157% compared to previous decades, with an annual economic impact of $373 billion.

Study results over the course of a year show:

  • For every 100 patients, Lumata Health enabled 89 additional retina-specialist visits and 72 additional intravitreal injection visits. These are both 17% improvements over typical year-over-year attrition, whichis more than 2.6 million additional injections administered per year in the US that people with chronic eye disease critically need.
  • Almost 98% of participants reported having one barrier to care, while 75% had two or more.
  • The top barriers to care were disease knowledge gaps, such as misunderstanding diagnosis or treatment necessity (>90%); the need for support resources and logistical issues like transportation or scheduling (47%); psychosocial burdens such as vision-related functional loss or caregiver strain (33%), and financial constraints (28%).
  • In the first year of enrollment with Lumata Health, 70% of patients have at least one documented barrier resolved, and nearly all undergo continuous surveillance for emerging risks.
  • The oldest, highest-risk patients experienced the greatest benefits, overcoming barriers to care with Lumata Health, like mobility and caregiver issues.

“The solution to preventing blindness in chronic eye disease isn’t better treatment. It’s better care outside of the physician’s office, and that’s what we are laser-focused on providing to people,” said Landon Grace, CEO of Lumata Health. “Ophthalmologists know how to prevent vision loss, and our physician-partners have been blown away by these study findings, as treatment adherence and care continuity are one of their biggest struggles in patient vision management. With our highly specialized ophthalmic support and sustained wraparound care, we help patients overcome key barriers to getting their critical intravitreal injections and testing, especially the oldest patients hit hardest by vision-threatening disease.”

Lumata Health’s Continuous Care model integrates trained ophthalmic technicians as a dedicated patient resource between office visits to reinforce the retina specialist’s treatment plan, surface and resolve barriers, and coordinate logistics that commonly erode adherence. This model is backed by the company’s data-driven predictive analytics platform that anticipates patient needs and proactively delivers support at important treatment junctures. As well, the company offers a remote-patient monitoring app called MyVisionTrack (mVT) that detects vision changes in patients (outperforming the Amsler Grid in sensitivity and specificity), notifying their care team and doctors of new problems, and utilizes patient alerts, helping patients be actively involved in their vision management.

Eye care providers across the United States, including the five largest national and regional eye care networks, such as EyeCare Partners (ECP) and PRISM Vision Group, rely on Lumata Health to improve treatment adherence and patient satisfaction, remove barriers to care, and improve outcomes. Currently serving more than 1,800 physicians, the company boosts efficiency and streamlines operations for clinic staff, reduces costs, and generates additional revenue. Lumata Health also partners with pharmaceutical manufacturers to bring specialized interventions to patients.
