LGC Group has officially opened a new National Laboratories facility in Guildford, marking a major £20 million investment in the UK’s scientific infrastructure. This modern center unites three key national science functions for the first time: the National Measurement Laboratory, the Office of the Government Chemist, and the chemical labs of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Together, these labs provide essential measurement science that underpins public health, product safety, and innovation, ensuring accuracy and reliability across industries—from testing medicine purity to verifying food authenticity and monitoring environmental pollutants.

Located in the Priestley Building on Surrey Research Park, the site features low-carbon, cutting-edge laboratories designed to foster collaboration between national science, academia, healthcare, and industry. This integrated hub aims to drive breakthroughs in diagnostics, sustainable manufacturing, antimicrobial resistance, and food security.

The National Measurement Laboratory ensures that scientific results from the UK meet global standards, while the Government Chemist provides independent analysis to resolve food safety disputes and protect consumers. The MHRA laboratories safeguard the quality of medicines reaching patients. Lawrence Tallon, CEO of MHRA, stated that bringing these teams together enhances the ability to align regulatory science with new research to maintain the highest levels of safety and quality.

Julian Braybrook, Government Chemist and Director of the National Laboratories, described the new facility as a center for collaboration that will address emerging measurement challenges, including cell therapies and antimicrobial resistance, while continuing to deliver reliable science essential for standardization. Kelly Cleveland, Head of Real Estate and Investment at British Land, which owns the Priestley Building, noted that the facility strengthens the Surrey Research Park’s scientific community and supports LGC’s ongoing contributions to public health and research excellence. This new National Laboratories facility reflects a long-term commitment to advancing measurement science, which forms the backbone of many sectors critical to society and the economy.
