Deakin University in Australia has recently entered into a Letter of Intent with the Telangana government’s Department of IT, Electronics & Communications. The goal is to work together to develop artificial intelligence in ways that help society and create more opportunities in the digital economy. Deakin brings with it more than three decades of experience in India and its top-tier research through its Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative. Telangana, on the other hand, contributes its Emerging Technology Wing, which aims to use AI in healthcare, education, governance, and entrepreneurship.

Shri Duddila Sridhar Babu, the Minister for IT, Electronics, Communications, and Industry in Telangana, said that AI is not just about technology—it’s about shaping the future. He explained that this partnership combines strong global research with local innovation to create an AI platform that is ethical, inclusive, and designed with people in mind. He pointed out that the partnership is built on skills development, data governance, and regulation. He said Telangana will become a place where global knowledge meets local needs to develop AI that benefits everyone.
Professor Iain Martin, Vice Chancellor of Deakin University, mentioned that Deakin already prepares students for the future through its programs in AI, cybersecurity, and health. This collaboration helps the university continue its mission of providing accessible, high-quality education and driving innovation through research.

Professor Svetha Venkatesh, Co-Director of Deakin’s Applied AI Initiative, stated that Australia and India have a special chance to work together on AI that is practical and meaningful to society. Ravneet Pawha, Vice President for Global Engagement and CEO for South Asia at Deakin, called this collaboration a major step in Australia-India academic cooperation. It aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020 and its vision for a digital economy. He also expressed Deakin’s pride in working with Telangana to deliver AI solutions that benefit the public.
The partnership will look into AI-based solutions for the public sector in areas like health, education, governance, and small and medium-sized enterprises. It aims to speed up the use of academic and deep-tech AI research in real-world situations by focusing on policies, ways to get AI solutions into use, and building the skills of public-sector workers. Other key areas include sharing knowledge based on local challenges, developing AI education to build talent, and providing workforce training. Special Chief Secretary Shri Sanjay Kumar welcomed the initiative, calling AI a powerful tool for fair and balanced growth. He said this collaboration strengthens Telangana’s ability to build AI skills that are rooted in its innovation environment, which in turn enhances India’s position on the world stage. Together, Deakin University and the Telangana government are creating a strong example of international academic-government collaboration. This partnership connects global research excellence with local needs to promote innovation across borders and ensure responsible AI development.
