AdvancedMD, a leading provider of cloud-based software for independent medical practices, released findings from a recent survey that looked into how technology is used in behavioral health care. The survey included over 200 medical group owners and staff, and the results showed that 67 percent of practices have at least one mental health specialist on board. Another 15 percent of the respondents said they don’t have a mental health provider on staff but do check patients for mental health issues.

According to Mental Health America’s 2024 report, almost one in four adults in the U.S. dealt with a mental illness in 2023. The report also found that one in five teenagers aged 12 to 17 had a major depressive episode that year, but less than half of them got treatment. At the same time, more than 122 million Americans live in areas where there aren’t enough mental health professionals, showing a big gap in care.

The survey results point to an increasing trend in ambulatory care to include more behavioral health services. When asked about the technology used for these services, 58 percent of respondents said they use telehealth platforms, which is more than double the number using digital screening and assessment tools. This shows how important telehealth is in making mental health care more accessible, especially in areas that are underserved.
Amanda Sharp, CEO of AdvancedMD, said the findings are important and highlighted the company’s focus on solutions that fit the unique needs of private practices. She explained that AdvancedMD’s telehealth features, customizable workflows, and billing tools are made to support behavioral health and offer a more complete patient experience. Sharp also stressed the convenience of telehealth and how it helps bring mental health care to rural communities that often don’t have specialists nearby.
The survey also found that nearly 70 percent of medical groups get telehealth requests for mental health services on a weekly or daily basis. Of those, 38 percent get daily requests. Over 60 percent of respondents said their digital tools are effective or somewhat effective in identifying and helping with patients’ mental health needs, showing how technology is making a difference in this important area of care.
