Health Union, a leading digital health company specializing in online community engagement and patient data, has released the results of its 2025 Connected Health Experiences and Perceptions of AI Survey. Conducted by Health Union’s Insights team, the survey collected responses from more than 6,000 patients representing 49 chronic conditions to better understand their experiences with technology-based health tools and their attitudes toward the emerging role of artificial intelligence in health management.

The survey findings indicate that patients are gradually incorporating AI into their healthcare routines, mostly as an initial step for gathering information. Despite this adoption, patients expressed ongoing concerns regarding the accuracy of AI-generated content, the privacy of their data, and the potential erosion of personalized care in healthcare interactions.

Lauren Lawhon, President of Health Union, stated that the rise of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini has introduced a new way for patients to access health information. She emphasized that while patients are exploring these tools, there is a strong demand for transparency, accurate information, and a human-centered approach. Lawhon noted that technology must support the patient-provider relationship rather than replace it to maintain trust and quality care.

Key findings from the survey revealed that AI adoption is still cautious. About one-third of patients surveyed reported using an AI tool for any purpose, with 18 percent specifically using AI to gather health-related information, including research on symptoms, medications, and test results. A larger group, approximately 66 percent, reported relying on AI-generated summaries as a starting point for online health research. However, fewer than half of those who used AI summaries consistently verified the sources, indicating a potential risk of relying on unverified information.

Accuracy and privacy emerged as major concerns. Only 13 percent of patients agreed that AI-generated summaries were generally accurate, prompting many to seek additional, verified information from other sources. Data privacy was highlighted by 35 percent of respondents as their top concern when using health-related technology, with the same percentage expressing worry about how AI tools handle personal data. Another critical theme was the importance of human connection. Patients expressed that AI cannot replace the nuanced understanding and individualized care provided by healthcare professionals, especially for complex medical needs. Age also played a role in technology adoption, with patients under 50 showing greater familiarity and comfort with health apps, patient portals, and AI tools compared with older participants.

The survey underscores the importance for healthcare stakeholders to implement AI thoughtfully, balancing convenience with patient trust and personalization. Lawhon explained that the main takeaway is the tension between the efficiency of AI and the need for trusted, human-driven care. She stressed that AI tools will be most successful when they enhance the relationship between patients and healthcare providers rather than attempt to bypass it.

Health Union is committed to addressing this balance through its “hybrid intelligence” approach. By combining AI with verified patient leadership and medically reviewed content, the company ensures that its digital health communities remain safe, trustworthy spaces for patients managing chronic conditions. Looking ahead, Health Union’s 2026 product offerings and Insights services aim to promote responsible AI adoption that amplifies the patient voice and strengthens the patient-provider relationship, ensuring that technology enhances the human aspects of healthcare while delivering data-driven insights.
