Abridge’s enterprise-grade artificial intelligence (AI) platform for clinical conversation notetaking will be deployed system-wide across one of the nation’s largest health systems

Northwell Health, the largest not-for-profit health system in the Northeast, announced its plan to deploy Abridge’s ambient artificial intelligence (AI) platform across its 28 hospitals to improve clinical documentation of patient conversations as part of its system-wide digital transformation.

Northwell Health, which serves over 3 million patients annually with 20,000 physicians and 22,000 nurses across its hospitals and 1,000 outpatient facilities in New York and Connecticut, selected Abridge’s ambient AI platform for its ability to scale and support health systems to ease administrative burdens for providers. This year, as Northwell undertakes one of the largest Epic Systems electronic health record implementations in the country, Abridge technology will help support clinicians across many workflows, and continue to scale as the rollout progresses.

“As we transform care delivery at scale, we are focused on how ambient AI can reimagine the experience for both patients and clinicians,” said Kristin Myers, MPH, executive vice president and chief digital officer at Northwell Health. “By leveraging Abridge’s enterprise-grade technology and expertise, we’re ensuring our transformation remains centered on what matters most—improving patient care and supporting the clinicians who deliver it.”

Abridge’s AI transforms medical conversations into clinically useful and billable documentation during patient conversations. The Abridge AI platform is designed to support clinicians across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings, supporting 55+ specialties and 28+ languages. This year alone, Abridge will support clinicians across more than 50 million medical conversations helping to reduce burnout by up to 67%, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

“Physician wellness and resiliency is one of the most essential issues facing healthcare today and promoting it requires redesigning how we work,” said Jill Kalman, MD, executive vice president, chief medical officer and deputy physician-in-chief at Northwell Health. “The patient and clinician interaction is precious and time is an invaluable resource. By reducing documentation burden, Abridge will help our clinicians return to what they do best: caring for our patients.”

“Northwell is shaping the future of healthcare, and it’s a privilege to help power that future from the ground up, starting at the point of conversation,” said Dr. Shiv Rao, CEO and co-founder of Abridge and a practicing cardiologist. “We’re going deep together and clinical documentation is just the start of the transformation.”

Abridge is also exploring how ambient AI can extend the value of clinical conversations across downstream workflows, including coding, risk adjustment, prior authorization, and other clinician use cases including nursing workflows.
