With the new bachelor’s degree program, students can complete a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program for as little as $750 a year
Newman University and Garden City Community College have announced a new bachelor’s degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, set to launch this fall. The program was unveiled at the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Monthly Membership Breakfast and has already attracted 41 applicants. Students in the program will have the opportunity to work alongside CommonSpirit Health medical professionals, gaining hands-on experience while helping address the growing healthcare needs of local communities.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran highlighted that this program strengthens the partnership between Newman University and Garden City Community College while addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural Kansas. He emphasized that the program will allow students in Southwest Kansas to gain in-demand skills without leaving their communities, helping retain local talent and enabling aspiring healthcare workers to achieve success close to home.
The Newman HERE program, a collaboration between local community colleges and Newman University, has already provided over 23 students with bachelor’s degrees and currently supports 33 students in the GCCC HERE program. With the addition of the new sonography degree, students will have further opportunities to pursue healthcare careers on their local campuses. Dr. Ryan Ruda, President of Garden City Community College, said that the program empowers students to train in a field where skilled professionals are in high demand and provides meaningful opportunities to support their communities.
The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program allows students to complete their degree in two years or less. With scholarships and grants, tuition can be as low as $750 per year. Graduates will be prepared to work as diagnostic medical sonographers, ultrasound technologists, echocardiographers, vascular sonographers, OB/GYN sonographers, musculoskeletal sonographers, or travel ultrasound technologists. Alden Stout, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Newman University, emphasized that the HERE program equips students with the education, tools, and clinical experience necessary to begin a successful medical career in Garden City.
Jason Justus, President of St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and Dodge City and Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, highlighted the importance of hands-on clinical experience for students. He noted that the partnership with Newman University and Garden City Community College helps develop the next generation of skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals for Southwest Kansas. The program ensures that students gain real-world experience and supports the growing need for trained sonographers in the region.
Through this collaboration, the HERE program continues to focus on preparing students to meet local healthcare demands, combining education and practical training to strengthen hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers throughout Southwest Kansas.
