NaphCare, Inc., a top provider of healthcare solutions for correctional facilities, has announced the full rollout of its electronic health record (EHR) system, TechCare, across all facilities managed by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC). The system started working in all 62 GDC facilities at the same time, marking a big step forward in how healthcare is provided to over 41,000 inmates in the state. TechCare was created to make clinical work easier by keeping all patient information in one place, improving how records are kept, and making it easier to generate reports. The main idea is to let healthcare workers spend more time on patient care and less time on paperwork. For one of the biggest prison systems in the country, finishing this transition in just nine months is a major accomplishment.

Charlie Barranco, NaphCare’s Chief Information Officer, said, “This is a big milestone for NaphCare—transitioning TechCare to one of the largest state prison systems in the U.S. in only nine months. We’re proud to work with the Georgia Department of Corrections, and this success shows how committed GDC is to patient care. With TechCare fully integrated, healthcare providers can spend less time on tasks and more time giving high-quality care.”
Ashley Atkinson, EHR Product Manager at NaphCare, added that working closely with GDC staff was key to the project’s success. “Moving such a large system smoothly wasn’t easy. Our partners at GDC and the healthcare team were essential to the project’s success,” Atkinson said. “We trained more than 1,700 health staff through peer-to-peer sessions, ensuring the GDC team could use TechCare confidently from day one and in their daily work.”

TechCare, first introduced in 2004, was the first EHR system designed specifically for correctional healthcare. Built with the unique needs of this environment in mind, it serves as a complete platform that supports clinical guidelines while following national healthcare standards. Over time, TechCare has added features like the MyCare Patient Portal and Power BI dashboards, helping to improve transparency, engage patients, and provide data that leads to better health results.
Now, TechCare is used in 195 correctional facilities nationwide, managing around 245,000 patient records every day. With a focus on working well with other systems and improving efficiency, TechCare helps healthcare teams reduce administrative work and provide better care to people in custody. This partnership with the Georgia Department of Corrections highlights NaphCare’s mission to improve correctional healthcare through innovation and teamwork. The successful launch not only shows TechCare’s ability to work in large systems but also sets a model for other states looking to implement similar solutions.
