More than 300 advanced CT scanners will be installed in public hospitals in 38 states by 2028 to support early diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases.

GE Healthcare has announced a major collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Health to supply more than 300 computed tomography scanners as part of the country’s Strengthening Indonesia’s Health Referral Network program. The initiative is designed to improve access to high quality diagnostic services for Indonesia’s population of over 280 million people and to reduce gaps in healthcare availability between urban centers and remote regions.

Under a multi year agreement awarded through a competitive and transparent international bidding process, GE Healthcare will provide advanced CT systems to public hospitals across all 38 provinces. The procurement process followed Islamic Development Bank guidelines to ensure fairness and compliance. The scanners will be deployed nationwide, reaching hospitals in major cities as well as facilities serving rural and hard to reach communities.

The SIHREN program represents the largest health infrastructure investment ever undertaken in Indonesia and ranks among the largest multilateral healthcare projects globally. Its primary objective is to modernize referral networks while improving access to diagnosis and treatment. The program places strong emphasis on managing non communicable diseases, supporting maternal and child health, and strengthening preparedness for future public health emergencies.

By expanding access to advanced imaging technology, the partnership aims to improve early detection and timely treatment of serious conditions such as cancer, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Broader access to CT diagnostics is expected to support better clinical decision making, improve patient outcomes, and help save lives across every region of the country.

Elie Chaillot, President and Chief Executive Officer for International operations at GE Healthcare, shared that the company is proud to support the Ministry of Health’s long term vision for a stronger and more resilient healthcare system. He explained that GE Healthcare’s continued focus on local manufacturing, workforce development, and training reflects its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s healthcare capacity while also contributing to economic growth. He added that ensuring advanced medical technologies reach rural and underserved communities is central to promoting healthcare equity nationwide.

CT scanners play a critical role in modern medicine by producing fast and highly detailed images of internal organs, bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues. These capabilities help clinicians diagnose injuries and illnesses efficiently, assess the size and progression of tumors or infections, monitor the effectiveness of treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and guide complex procedures including biopsies.

GE Healthcare has further strengthened its footprint in Indonesia through the opening of a local production facility in Bogor, developed in partnership with Forsta, a subsidiary of PT Kalbe Farma. The facility is intended to reinforce the country’s medical technology supply chain, encourage technology transfer, and support the development of a skilled local workforce in healthcare technology.

The company has worked closely with Indonesia’s public and private healthcare sectors for more than seven decades. In early 2025, GE Healthcare also received an order for ten 1.5 Tesla MRI systems for a public hospital network. These systems provide high resolution imaging that supports early diagnosis and ongoing monitoring of conditions such as cancer, stroke, and heart disease, which are critical to effective non communicable disease management.

In 2024, GE Healthcare established its Regional Innovation and Training Experience hub in Jakarta. The center offers hands on training for healthcare professionals in advanced imaging technologies, including CT and MRI systems, and collaborates with educational institutions to provide programs focused on equipment use and clinical workflows. By strengthening local expertise, the center aims to help healthcare providers maximize the benefits of medical technology across Indonesia.
