BrainCheck, a leading FDA Class II digital platform for cognitive assessment and care, has received a $500,000 SBIR Phase I grant from the National Institutes of Health to advance BrainCheck eConsult, a secure web-based tool connecting primary care providers with dementia and cognitive specialists. The platform is designed to streamline diagnosis and management of cognitive impairment by enabling asynchronous consultations, reducing delays and the need for immediate in-person visits.

The eConsult system will be fully integrated within BrainCheck Assess, allowing providers to submit cases immediately after reviewing cognitive test results. Specialists will respond with recommendations through a HIPAA-compliant interface, and both referring and consulting clinicians can bill using standard CPT codes.
Chris Loughlin, BrainCheck’s CEO, emphasized that the grant supports the company’s goal of making cognitive healthcare more accessible and efficient by connecting primary care and specialists within a single platform. The NIH funding will support design, development, and feasibility testing of the prototype over the coming year, with plans for future electronic health record integration and AI-assisted clinical decision support.
Katherine Carroll Britt from the University of Iowa will lead the co-design of the platform’s qualitative components, while Nathan Bell, MD, from Frontier Psychiatry, will oversee the pilot study evaluating the tool in real-world clinical practice.
