B. Braun SE, a major player in medical technology worldwide, has finalized the full purchase of True Digital Surgery (TDS), a company based in California that specializes in digital robotic-assisted 3D surgical microscopy. This acquisition shows B. Braun’s dedication to pushing forward in digital microsurgery and growing its presence in this rapidly expanding area. B. Braun had already owned a smaller share in TDS, but now, with full ownership, the company’s surgical division Aesculap can use TDS’s knowledge and skills to keep creating new innovations for the Aesculap AEOS platform, which is commonly used in neurosurgery, spinal surgeries, and ENT procedures.

Dr. Jens von Lackum, a member of B. Braun’s executive board who oversees the Aesculap division, stated that this move allows the company to merge TDS’s cutting-edge technology with Aesculap’s proven expertise. He highlighted that this combination will give surgeons access to some of the most advanced systems in robotic-assisted 3D microsurgery and expressed excitement about the chances to expand digital surgical options.

The microsurgery field, especially in neurosurgery, spine surgery, and ENT, is currently shifting from traditional optical microscopes to digital exoscopes. These new systems allow surgeons better visualization with wider angles and enable them to view 3D monitors instead of using eyepieces. This change also makes the operating room more comfortable by letting surgeons stand upright, which reduces fatigue during long surgeries.
Aidan Foley, the former CEO and Chairman of TDS, mentioned that joining B. Braun is a significant milestone for the company. He pointed out that the partnership will combine TDS’s innovative technologies with B. Braun’s global network, creating new chances to support healthcare professionals and help patients achieve better results.
TDS will keep operating from its Goleta location in California, acting as a center for technological progress. B. Braun has said that this acquisition will let the TDS team continue to focus on innovation and the integration of new technologies into the company’s surgical range.
